What is our Multicultural ministry at Waverley?
In the great commission, Jesus directed his disciples ‘Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.’ Matthew 28:19.
In 2021, 50.4% of people in City of Monash were born overseas*, mostly from China and India, and so our mission field now lies in our local community. Over the last eight years, our English Conversation Club has responded to this call. Through online advertising, letter drops and noticeboards, 280 people from 24 different countries have come to us at Waverley. Each lesson shares the Gospel through a Bible Study and through developing friendships.
Participants also join the fortnightly Coffee and Chat group and many come to play table tennis weekly on Friday nights. Now most people come through word of mouth, encouraged by their friends, as word of our welcoming activities is spreading. We endeavour to develop an integrated congregation, not one where congregations develop in parallel communities. Through kindness and friendship, every member of Nunawading Waverley is part of this blessed outreach which has seen a baptism, and other enquiries about church membership being made.
The potential of this ministry is beyond us to realise, and so the LCA kindly granted us funds to employ a Mandarin speaking Multicultural Events Evangelist and Coordinator. It has been difficult to find the right person, but we will set out on this task again. We are in God’s hands – may He inspire and guide us along our way.
